In order to develop an effective vision for health care organizations, there is a need to describe core values within the organization. One of the biggest mistakes that health care and other industries can do in developing a vision is put values down on a piece of paper without understanding that values are not created, but are discovered.

Everyone has his or her own core values. This is evident by the way different people will react to different situations or environments. One person may react out of anger, or out of frustration, or out of feeling valued. Each of these responses reflect either a support or an affront to a core value.

Since each individual has core values, the role of a senior executive in developing the vision and strategy, is not to make up values, but to discover the shared core values that already exist. This can be challenging, since values are often found in the middle of dispute or difficult situations. However, if we are to have an effective vision, we need to understand these core values and once identified, each person in the organization can begin to feel like they are part of a company that understands and values them.

This sense of value can help create an environment in which greater potential exists than before. This is one of the steps in tapping into the unrealized potential that exists in many health care organizations. If health care focuses only on process and does not align vision and strategy to reflect core values and core ideology, it is unlikely that meaningful movement will occur to attain its goals. Across all industries, we know that companies are only 63% effective.
